Anise rosquitas are a traditional sweet that has lasted over time in many cultures, including Peru's. These little rings, known for their shape and their delicate anise flavor, are popular in many parts of the world, but in Peru they have taken on a special touch thanks to the country's rich baking tradition.
The origin of anise rosquitas goes back to the colonial era, when Spanish influence began to blend with local culinary customs. During that period, Peruvian cooking was strongly influenced by Spanish baking, adapting and reinventing recipes that are now part of Peru's cultural heritage. Anise rosquitas are no exception. Although this sweet has roots in the Iberian Peninsula, in Peru it has become fully part of local cooking, one of the favorite treats to enjoy with coffee or tea in the afternoon, especially at family gatherings and patron saint festivals.
Anise, a spice that arrived in the Americas with the colonizers, is the star ingredient of these rosquitas. With its sweet and slightly spicy flavor, anise gives these rings their unmistakable taste. Traditionally, rosquitas are made with simple ingredients such as flour, sugar, butter and eggs, but it is the anise that gives them that special touch that makes them unique. In many regions of Peru, anise rosquitas are made at home, following recipes handed down from generation to generation, keeping their authenticity and original flavor.
For anyone who enjoys exploring Peruvian baking, anise rosquitas are a must. Like other classics such as Crema Volteada and how to make Cornstarch Alfajores, anise rosquitas are a perfect example of how Peruvian cuisine has taken foreign influences and adapted them to its own style, creating desserts that are now emblems of its culinary tradition.
